Hi! My name’s Linus and I’m the Personal Trainer behind emanciPT. 🙂
Growing up in Edinburgh I wasn’t massively drawn to any kind of sports or exercise – skipping PE at school, sitting out on the bench whenever possible, all that jazz. I initially began resistance training at the gym as a means of managing an eating disorder, and found building muscle the single most helpful thing in getting back to feeling okay about eating food again.
Like basically everyone else, my exercise programme stalled for a couple years during the pandemic. During this time I moved into Edinburgh Student Housing Co-Operative, where I ended up living for 4+ years. My time there was defined by a far greater exposure to queer spaces and radical movements; to this day still the single most influential experience of my life.
I gradually began getting into home-based workouts, using whatever items I found around me. Without even a pull-up bar, I was forced to educate myself on the science and mechanisms underpinning bodyweight movements – so that I was empowered to get the absolute most out of minimal available resources. This approach well-prepared me for returning to gym-based exercise; engraining in me an aversion to ego-lifting or ineffective form.
For a period of time, my reasons transitioned from combatting my ED to training for professional wrestling – which I attended on and off for a number of years. The unique nature of the sport required a hybrid training style; improving strength, size, and cardio all at once while minimising fatigue present during classes themselves. This, alongside university and part-time work, made me very familiar with the difficulties of finding the time and energy for exercise during busy and tiring periods of life.
Today I find myself primarily exercising for my own state of mind – the number of lessons which resistance training teaches you about fatigue management and self-care, which apply to the rest of your life, never fails to amaze me. While my training currently closest reflects a size-based/bodybuilding-style programme, I’m familiar with a wide diversity of approaches due to my own personal history – so very likely can help you get to wherever you want to be. 🙂
